I tested seven household alternatives over six weeks, evaluating stem stability, water retention, and reusability. The goal was identifying which items could replace foam without compromising arrangement structure.
Chicken wire performed best for mixed arrangements
A single roll purchased for 45 UAH provided material for 20 arrangements. I cut sections to fit container openings, crumpled them loosely, and secured them with waterproof tape. Stems inserted easily and stayed positioned.
Glass marbles worked well for single-variety displays. A bag costing 30 UAH handled eight arrangements before I needed more. They added weight to lightweight containers and created visual interest through clear glass.
Items that failed testing
Crumpled newspaper disintegrated within two days. Sponges retained too much water, causing stem rot. Modeling clay prevented water access entirely.
The chicken wire method reduced my monthly supply costs from 96 UAH to under 15 UAH. Setup time increased by roughly three minutes per arrangement, but the wire could be cleaned and reused multiple times. This shifted my budget toward purchasing better quality stems instead of disposable mechanics.
